Earth Tear

Earth Tear was made in 1995 during an Artist-In-Residency at Sanitary Fill, Norcal Co. at the major disposal yard for the Bay Area. It was my first free-standing sculpture and I learned to weld. The work has a frame of steel and discarded plastic bottles are shaped to form the shape of a tear drop. The sculpture inspired several large works of art for the public. In 2016 an article appeared in Hyper/Allergic featuring a dirty “Earth Tear.” The garden at the dump is hard to find, windy, dirty, and neglected. Sculpture made of plastic loses its luster and disintegrates. It was an appropriate image for the article which was not about art but about homelessness and neglect. The image reminds one - nature survives and will eventually cover us in earth.
